A Texan male has been convicted of capital murder for the 2018 shooting death of a 7-year-old Black girl during a drive-by.

The accused, Larry Woodruffe was given an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole for the crime, which the girl’s family initially believed was racially motivated.

Reports indicate that was one of two men charged with killing Jazmine Barnes on December 30, 2018, as she and her family drove to a Houston grocery store.

The other accused, 23-year-old Eric Black Jr, pleaded guilty last month as part of an agreement with prosecutors that reduced his charge to murder; He is currently awaiting sentencing.

Meanwhile, Court records show that Woodruffe has a lengthy criminal history, including being sentenced in January 2017 to two years in prison for assaulting a family member.

That same year, he was released under mandatory supervision, and by November he was charged with being a felon in possession of a gun, documents said.

Court records also show that he also pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in a weapons case and was sentenced to nine months in county jail. When Woodruffe pleaded guilty in that case, he was two months shy of completing his sentence on the assault charge, records show.
