Korean authorities have outlined that at least eight people were killed, and nine others injured following a record-breaking downpour prompted a flood in Seoul on Monday.
South Korea’s Interior and Safety Ministry further stated that three of deceased victims were trapped in a flooded semi-basement.
Official reports indicate that since Monday night, Seoul saw a total of 422 millimeters (16.6 inches) of rain, prompting authorities to raise the highest Level 3 emergency alert.
Reports from the Korean Meteorological Agency also stated that some areas received the highest rate of rainfall in 80 years.
Additionally in some parts of Seoul, drains backed up and sent water pouring back into streets and subway stations. Furthermore, a number of subway stations were closed due to flooding, with lines temporarily suspended Monday night.
So far, 800 residents were evacuated to schools and gyms while some residents have voluntarily sought shelter in local community centers as flooding affected more than 700 houses and shops.
Meanwhile, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has relayed condolences to the affected families and has also noted that an on-site inspection will be conducted to prevent additional damage.
