Afrobeats star Wizkid has broken another musical glass ceiling, accomplishing the stunning feat of being the first African artiste to hit 6 million streams on Spotify.

This includes all of the Grammy award-winning Nigerian artiste’s musical credentials, highlighting him as a trailblazer and pioneer in the African music scene.

A few weeks ago, Wizkid became the first African musician to earn the BRIT Billion Award for achieving over one billion streams in the United Kingdom.

When taking into account the expansion and penetration of streaming platforms across the thriving Nigerian music scene, the significance of Wizkid’s achievement is amplified.

In just two years since Spotify first launched in Nigeria, it has been deeply ingrained in the culture of the nation and its impact has been felt across Africa, making a substantial contribution to the development and growth of their music business.

Wizkid has sold millions of units in the UK, including his collaboration with Drake and Kyla, ‘One Dance’ which is certified six times Platinum for selling over 3.6 units.

‘Energy’ with Skepta and ‘Essence’ with Tems are certified Platinum while ‘Come Closer’ with Drake, and ‘Brown Skin Girl’ with Beyoncé are certified Gold.

Wizkid’s fourth studio album, ‘Made In Lagos’ is also certified Gold in the UK.

An icon is how many African media and music houses classify ‘the Starboy’ Wizkid.
