Legendary German midfielder Toni Kroos’ retirement from professional football was confirmed on Friday following Germany’s 2-1 loss to Spain to exit the 2024 European Football Championships.

Kroos, who was in pursuit of a fairytale send-off, had to settle for commiseration, as goals from Dani Almo and Mikel Merino, confirmed his departure as well as Germany’s exit.

In an intense match-up which saw drama until the very end, Kroos’ final minutes was sealed after Dani Almo’s 51st-minute strike held until the 89th before Florian Wirstz sent the game into extra time.

Despite a late surge from the host in additional time, including a penalty appeal, Mikel Merrino’s effort in the 119th minute confirmed Spain’s spot in the final four and Germany’s exit.

The result also concluded Kroos’ official departure from football after retiring at the club level earlier this year.
