A piece of conceptual art consisting of a simple banana, duct-taped to a wall, sold for $6.2 million at a recent auction in New York, with the winning bid coming from a prominent cryptocurrency entrepreneur.

In one of the most unique pieces of art-related sales in recent times, a conceptual art piece consisting of a single banana duct taped to a blank wall was auctioned for $6.2 million in New York.

The piece titled “Comedian,” by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was an instant phenomenon inside and outside the art world following its 2019 debut at Art Basel Miami Beach.

The ultra-simplicity of the piece pushed the boundary of contemporary concepts as many tried to decipher what the idea represented behind the taped fruit to the wall as it fueled debate among perceptions of art.

The multi-million sale highlights the growing insatiable interest in the bizarre art, with sales for three previous editions ranging from $120,000 to $150,000, according to the gallery handling sales at the time.

Crypto Currency entrepreneur Justin Sun was the highest bidder of the artwork.

The piece “represents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community sun shared in a statement, as per ABC News 7.

The piece will, however, not be mounted in a safe or private showroom as the wealthy art collector shared that “in the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honouring its place in both art history and popular culture,” Sun said.
