A Chinese man has become the bud of ridicule and family shame on local social media after reportedly spending over 4 million yuan (US$550,000) as live tips to a female live streamer in hopes of getting attention.
The man, identified by the surname Hong, hailing from Zhejiang province in southeastern China, developed a concerning obsession with the undisclosed streamer earlier this year, after which he began funnelling money into supporting the individual.
It’s reported that Hong, who worked in the family’s hardware business, resorted to stealing copper material from the business to resell, which tallied more than half a million dollars after his access to the accounts was restricted and depleting his own accounts.
The roost was, however, uncovered after authorities got involved in investigating the significant loss of the material, which was traced back to him.
He later confessed after his initial denial and confirmed the reason for his theft. He was subsequently and was arrested for theft.
