Kingston, Jamaica — The Board and members of Peace and Love in Society (PALS) Jamaica express profound sorrow and concern following the tragic incident at Ocho Rios High School on March 5, 2026, which resulted in the loss of a young student’s life. PALS acknowledges the unimaginable distress now being experienced by the family of the other student involved.

This tragedy has touched not only the families directly affected, but also the students, teachers, and wider community who must now grapple with its emotional aftermath.
“This tragedy must serve as a moment of national reflection and decisive action. For far too long, programmes that equip our young people with the tools to manage conflict, regulate emotions, and resolve disputes peacefully have not received the level of attention or sustained funding required,” said Chairman of PALS, Christopher Barnes.

“If we are serious about preventing incidents like this from becoming more common, Jamaica must invest more intentionally in the preventative systems that help our children navigate conflict before it escalates.”
PALS Tested Programme Success. For more than three decades, PALS has worked directly within schools to strengthen the social and emotional skills that allow students to manage disagreements constructively.

Through behaviour modification programmes, peer mediation training, values and attitudes development, and peace education workshops, the organisation has seen how structured interventions can change the culture of a school environment.

When students are given the language, tools, and safe spaces to address conflict early, disputes that might otherwise escalate into violence can be redirected into dialogue and resolution. These programmes do not simply respond to crises; they work to build emotional resilience, empathy, and communication skills, helping young people navigate the pressures of adolescence, peer dynamics, and personal challenges in healthier ways.

The incident at Ocho Rios High School underscores the urgency of expanding these kinds of structured supports across Jamaica’s education system, particularly in schools experiencing persistent behavioural and social challenges. Preventative interventions must be scaled and sustained if they are to have meaningful national impact. An Urgent Appeal PALS, therefore calls on the Government of Jamaica, the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, and private sector and civil society partners to deepen their support for peace education and conflict resolution initiatives.

Long-term investment in preventative programmes, including peer mediation systems, conflict resolution training, and structured behavioural support, represents one of the most practical ways to address the root causes of school-based violence.

In the wake of this tragedy, PALS encourages all Jamaicans to recommit to building a culture where empathy, dialogue, and mutual respect guide how our young people learn to resolve their differences, ensuring that our schools remain spaces of safety, growth, and opportunity for every child.
