Belgium crushed,France gets upset in Nation’s League

Reigning World Champs France got their Nation’s League campaign off to an unexpected start after they were upset 2-1 by Denmark in their Group N encounter opener.

Despite the Ballon D’or front runner Karim Benzema continuing his prolific form in front of goal, to open scoring in minute 58, it was Denmark’s Andreas Cornelius who stole show.

The second half substitute netted twice in 20 minutes to lead the Danes to an incredible victory over the French.

Cornelius opened his account in the 68th minute to cancel Benzema’s strike before doubling his and Denmark’s tally two minutes from time for a dramatic result and three massive points to go second in the group.

France was left to contemplate their next move at the bottom of the table with zero points from one played.

World Cup semifinalist Belgium will also be deep in reflection following their 4-1 dismantling by Netherlands in their fixture.

Belgium, who have looked less than impressive in their last few games were expected to offer good competition to a strong Holland team.

Competition was however left on paper as on they looked almost like an average team playing against a more professional unit.

Barcelona Striker Memphis Depay netted a brace in the 51st and 65th minutes to consolidate their lead after Steven Bergwijn opened scoring for the Dutch in minute 40.

Denzel Dumfries was also on the scoresheet in the 61st minute as they dumped four goals inside 15 minutes to stun the Belgians.

Despite an all time leading score by Chelsea’s Romelu Lukkau on field, he was more of a liability in front of goal, looking far from fit and lacking threat in attack. They did however mange to bag a consolation goal in the dying moments of the game. Michy Batshuayi-Atunga taking a 93rd minute goal to lessen the optics of the defeat.

They remain at the foot of group C with zero while Netherlands rises to first with three points and plus three goal difference.
