“I personally don’t Love being labeled or called a Dancehall artiste” says Brick & Lace singer Nyla.

The ‘Love is Wicked’ hitmaker declared her stance in a video shared on her social media on Tuesday.

“ I Feel like my range and my voice, I feel like it crosses many  other different genres of music” she said, adding, “If you listen to some of my most recent or latest music it kinda steers toward more Electronic/ dance music shoot I can even do country”

Nyla noted that while the group whose ascension into popularity started with the local music they have done other styles of music.

“If you actually listen to some of the B&L [Brick and Lace] album you would hear that we did other stuff outside of just us being on Dancehall beats, we have more R&B records and more pop records ” said Nyla.

The singer added that given the range of their diversity, their perception or classification to a specific genre [Dancehall] would be an unfair assessment.

“So to box us into that category, it feels like it’s not really fair and not really genuine,” she said.

While expressing her views about her musical categorization, she, however, noted that her views should not be seen as a belittling of the genre or its practitioners.

“This is not to take away from any other dancehall artiste who is content in being in that space, and who is, you know, bringing so much awareness to our culture and the sound of dancehall etc…” she said

“Not to say you know, I don’t delve into dancehall but, do I want to be having that label slapdash on the top of my head, no, Nyla added.

“I feel like I’m a global international artiste and I prefer to be labeled as such” she concluded before ending the reel.

Nyla had previously addressed reports about being miscategorized as a one-hit-wonder in a previous video where she shared a sample of her musical credits to several international hits and charters.

Brick and Lace which consists of sisters Nyla and Nyanda Thorbourne, rose to international acclaim following their 2007 break-out track- ‘Love is Wicked’ on the Diwali Riddim.
