Hungary is set to attract the attentive gaze of the world next week as Jamaican sprint superstars Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson, Tina Clayton, and Kishane Thompson will be among the headliners at the Gyulai István Memorial track meet in Hungary on August 12.
The Jamaicans who were officially confirmed as entrants by organisers on Friday afternoon are set to line up in the men’s and women’s 100m.
Fraser-Pryce and Jackson, Clayton, are set to face strong competition from Ivory Coast’s Marie Josee Taluo Smith, along with a competitive U.S. contingent including Jascious Sears, Tamari Davis, Cambrea Sturgis, and Maia McCoy.
The Jamaican trio, who’ve had limited competitive outings this season, will be running together for the first time since linking up in the 4x100m at the World Relays in China in July, where they copped silver, securing the country’s spot at the World Championships. The meet is expected to provide some solid preparation for their sharpness ahead of Tokyo-hoated games.
On the men’s side, Jamaica will also have three competitors led by World Champs gold medal favourite Kishane Thompson, who will also enter as the main draw for the event, with a world-leading 9.75s. Fellow medal contender, countryman World Indoor 60m Bronze Medalist Akckeem Blake and Rohan Watson are also expected to deliver fireworks when they take their blocks.
They will be facing off against Akani Simbine of South Africa, Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu of Ghana and Nigerian fast-riser Kayinsola Ajayi in a Jamaica vs Africa showdown so to speak.
The event will be a part of a handful of competitions for Thompson, including his two scheduled upcoming mega clashes against the Olympic Champion and rival Noah Lyles on the 16th and 20th of August, ahead of the World Championships.
