Ebony Drysdale-Daley marked another historic occasion for Jamaica in Judo, but bowed out at the elimination round of 32 in the Women’s 70Kg category after going down to Portugal’s Babara Timo at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games a short while ago.
Drysdale-Daley, 26, struggled to find an attack route against her decorated opponent, and in the process picked up three “Shido”, which handed an automatic 10-0 win to the 30-year-old Timo.
The Shido (instruction/ light penalty) is called when a rule violation occurs during a Judo contest. A Shido is issued for minor violations such as excessive passivity, using a technique or manoeuvre that hinders the development of a Waza, using a technique or manoeuvre that poses a risk of injury to the opponent.
The Britain-based Drysdale-Daley, who is the country’s first-ever competitor in the sport to qualify for the Olympic Games, first etched her name in Jamaica’s history books when she won gold at the Commonwealth Games Judo Championships in Birmingham, United Kingdom in 2019.
