A Singaporean man reportedly got fined thousands of dollars for forging a Death Certificate of his Grandfather in order to get paid leave from his workplace.
According to reports, the man, identified as 29-year-old Barath Gopal, a former security financing operation analyst, was slapped with a $4,000 fine following a guilty plea to forging a relative’s death certificate with the intention of comming fraud.
it’s understood that the ruling closes the lid on the late 2023 incident where Gopal attempted to finesse his supervisors to grant him paid time off under the guise of compassionate leave after his girlfriend ended their relationship.
According to reports, he found it difficult to focus on work after the breakup and opted to take extreme measures instead of applying for one of his yearly entitled days off. His plans seemed to be going according until his supervisor asked for the certificate of his relative.
It is further understood that he then contacted a friend for a copy of his relative’s death certificate who passed that year, to use a template in forging an imitation on his laptop, smartly leaving out the QR code of authenticity before sending the image.
The rouse was however up after his superiors, unsatisfied, asked for a copy of the entire to which he complied but not before resigning from the post.
In Singapore, forging a death certificate can attract penalties of fines up to $10,000, 10 10-year jail sentence or both.
