A 23-year-old Kazakh man showcased the real-world effectiveness of Artificial intelligence (AI) after reportedly using ChatGPT to successfully challenge a traffic violation ticket in a court of law.
According to reports, the recently resolved case stemmed from a December 2024 incident as the man identified as Kenzhebek Ismailov is said to have received a ticket in the mail for an alleged traffic offence, which was caught on camera. The alleged offence, which Mr Ismailov vehemently disputed, as unjustified based on the sequence of what transpired.
It’s understood that the 23-year-old turned to the AI tool for consultation on his course of action, which was to the courts after his complaints to the traffic authorities were rejected.
It’s further understood that the man, unfamiliar with nuances of the legal wranglings, courtroom protocols and unwillingness to spend on hiring a counsel in his contest of 5,800 tenge ($11) traffic fine, Ismailov turned to ChatGPT for legal assistance.
According to reports, the shrewd who detailed the ordeal online said that after typing his situation into ChatGPT and mentioning the presence of video evidence of his maneuver on the national traffic authority website, the AI tool suggested his best option was through the courts.
It’s further reported that the Traffic Authorities then contacted him and attempted to settle the issue out of court by allegedly offering to rebate the fine and remove the offence from their database after he filed his motion.
He, however, proceeded with the case under advice from ChatGPT, which acted as his lawyer in court after he used the speech synthesis function to allow it to verbalise responses to prompts on the situation, which the judge agreed, ruling in the plaintiff’s favour cancelling the fine.
“This is probably the first trial in Kazakhstan that was 99% conducted with the help of ChatGPT,” Ismailov said. “During the hearing, I turned on the speech synthesis, and it immediately prompted me how to respond.”
The motorist, who claimed to have only challenged the traffic violation out of principle because he knew he was right, is allegedly considering plans to use ChatGPT to file a civil lawsuit against the police, demanding compensation for the time he wasted contesting the fine.
