American actor Michael B Jordan may have landed himself in hot water with the Caribbean community. The backlash began on Sunday after West Indian Twitter was made aware of his new spirit venture, J’ouvert Rum. The rum, still in it’s pre-launch stage, is named after the Trinidad and Tobago originated term meaning day break or morning, signaling the start of Carnival.

The label of the J’ouvert Rum, featuring an abstract logo vaguely representing a map of the islands the drink is based on also features the description:

Jordan, having no ethnic ties to the Caribbean region is being accused of cultural appropriation having allegedly trademarked the historical phrase rendering it unusable to the people who it emerged from.
The outrage has since sparked into a larger controversy attracting attention from American gossip blog, The Shade Room as well as many other news platforms including Buzzfeed and BlackEnterprise.
A petition now circulates in an effort to stop the Black Panther actor from copyrighting the word J’ouvert.
