The unwavering global craving for music from Dancehall Juggernaut Shaggy was further underlined as he celebrated his 2001 ‘cult classic’ “It Wasn’t Me” ft Rik Rok, reaching one billion streams on Spotify.

“Mr Boombastic” toasted the milestone by thanking fans for their continued support of the Dancehall song, which has grown to be a cross-generational pop culture reference, maintaining its relevance among the youth more than 20 years later.

It Wasn’t Me” was a lead single from Shaggy’s diamond-selling “Hotshot” album, which itself has been labelled an international classic release, with Billboard ranking the Jamaican’s project among the top 100 Abums of the 21st Century.

The single, which uses a playful satire as a conversational bop about handling a relationship dilemma mainly being caught up in infidelity, became an instant smash among music lovers for its reliability.

“It Wasn’t Me” became Shaggy’s first Billboard Hot 100-topper in Feb. 2001, as well as the U.K.’s best-selling single of that year, Billboard reports.

The track was also a Grammy nominee for “Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals”. That feat was followed up by the number-one charting of his single “Angel” ft Rayon a month later.
