This December, the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), will host two Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies to bring a sense of comfort, familiarity, and festive warmth to families in Montego Bay on December 12 and Ocho Rios on
December 19.

The ceremonies, which will take place at Harmony Beach Park Montego Bay, and Turtle River Park, Ocho Rios, are intended to provide opportunities for Jamaicans to enjoy the season, especially as communities continue to settle
after the challenges brought by Hurricane Melissa. The events will focus on creating an atmosphere where families can slow down, gather, and enjoy simple moments of Christmas joy.

Over the years, the UDC’s tree lighting celebrations have become meaningful markers of the holiday season, bringing communities together in public spaces that feel welcoming and familiar. This year, the Corporation will host thoughtfully curated ceremonies, prioritizing warmth and togetherness.
Chairman of the UDC, Norman Brown, shared that the events are meant to offer Jamaicans a sense of reassurance for the season.

“A lot has happened in recent months, and Jamaicans are doing their best to carry on,” he said. “We wanted to create something that reminds families that the spirit of Christmas is still alive. Even if the season looks a little different this
year, hope remains a powerful part of who we are and I encourage Jamaicans to come out and enjoy an evening where we celebrate the meaning of the season, with our loved ones.”

In the meantime, General Manager, Bobby Honeyghan, noted that it was important to enable families and children to have access to a meaningful holiday experience. “Christmas holds a special place in the hearts of Jamaicans,” he said. “We wanted to make sure the children still have that moment of magic, and that parents have a peaceful space to share in the season.

These events may be more modest than in past years, but the intention behind them is sincere and
that is to offer joy, light, and a comforting space for families to gather.” Each ceremony will feature the lighting of the Christmas tree, along with children’s activities, toys, festive displays, and opportunities for family photos.

The UDC will work closely with municipal partners, the police, and first responders to
ensure that each event is safe, enjoyable, and smoothly coordinated. As the Corporation continues its work across the island, its focus remains on supporting the well-being of communities through public spaces and
experiences that foster connection, gratitude, and unity, especially during the
holiday season.

The UDC looks forward to providing further details on the programme, activities, and arrangements in the coming days and invite Jamaicans to connect via our social media platforms, UDCJamaica, for updates.
